Origami Self-Folding Sheets

origami scienceIn the June 2, 2010 issue of PNAS, researchers Hawkes et al report the development of a sheet of composite material which can fold itself. The flat sheet is composed of triangular panels lined with foil actuators (motors). When an electric current is passed through the sheet, select edges expand and/or contract causing the sheet to fold into origami-like boats & planes. Once the desired shape is realized, the shape is held in place with magnets.
This seemingly simple procedure is significant because it requires that a material interacts with its environment and rearrange itself according to specified shapes/stiffness. This may lead to, for example, a measuring cup which folds itself according to the amount and/or temperature of the liquid which it holds.

Finally, an accessory any Transformer would love. Researchers have created flat sheets of composite material that can fold themselves into toy boats, tents, and even paper airplanes. Based on the ancient art of origami, the sheets are edged by foil actuators--thin, solid-state motors--that contract or expand when they receive an electric current from flexible electronic circuits embedded in the sheets. After they achieve their preprogrammed shape, the sheets are held in place by tiny magnets on the edges of the fold joints. Researchers say the technology, described online today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could be scaled up to create ultra-portable tripods or even cups that automatically adjust to the size of liquid being poured into them.

Programmable matter is a material whose properties can be programmed to achieve specific shapes or stiffnesses upon command. This concept requires constituent elements to interact and rearrange intelligently in order to meet the goal. This paper considers achieving programmable sheets that can form themselves in different shapes autonomously by folding. Past approaches to creating transforming machines have been limited by the small feature sizes, the large number of components, and the associated complexity of communication among the units. We seek to mitigate these difficulties through the unique concept of self-folding origami with universal crease patterns. This approach exploits a single sheet composed of interconnected triangular sections. The sheet is able to fold into a set of predetermined shapes using embedded actuation. To implement this self-folding origami concept, we have developed a scalable end-to-end planning and fabrication process. Given a set of desired objects, the system computes an optimized design for a single sheet and multiple controllers to achieve each of the desired objects. The material, called programmable matter by folding, is an example of a system capable of achieving multiple shapes for multiple functions.

Pollen Origami

In the April 23, 2010 issue of PNAS, researchers (Katiforia, Alben, Cerda, Nelson, and Dumais) from the University of Tulsa showed that pollen grains dehydrate and fold upon itself in a defined manner based on its geometry. This controlled folding is similar to the way a crease pattern can be collapsed into a defined origami model.

Solar Origami

February 16, 2010; Applied Physics Letters.
Conventional solar panels are flat and do not capture the sun's rays efficiently unless they were tilted to track the movement of the sun. MIT professor Jeffrey Grossman propose a method of folding solar cell systems such that they could produce a constant amount of power regardless of the sun's movements. Some of these folded solar cell systems are 2½ times more efficient than the traditional flat arrays.

Titanium-Printed Origami Crane

In the April, 2009 issue of Advanced Materials, Jennifer Lewis and her research team (U of Illinois) developed a new method for fabricating small, complex 3D structures which are needed in biomedical devices. The novel method involves printing titanium hydride ink into flat sheets then folding the sheets into intricate designs.
Initially, the titanium sheets dried and cracked but researchers overcame the problem by using wet folding ideas from origami. A mix of fast- and slow-drying solvents were used so that the titanium sheets dried partially but were still flexible enough to fold without cracking. Researchers said, "marriage of printing and origami techniques allows for greater structural complexity".

Ultrathin, High-Resolution Origami Lens

In January 2007, Eric Tremblay and Joseph Ford from the University of California in San Diego have made an ultrathin, high-resolution Origami Lens. The lens is very thin and is 7 times more powerful that conventional camera lenses.
Typically, camera lenses use many parts to bend and focus light. The Origami Lens replaces the many parts of a conventional camera lens with one optical system; this makes the lens thinner.
The Origami Lens is made of a crystal which is diamond-cut so that the light travels in a zig-zag manner analogous to the way paper is pleated in origami. Note: the lens itself is not folded, but the optical path is folded.

da Vinci Robot does Origami

The da Vinci® Surgical System was invented by Intuitive Surgical and is FDA approved for a variety of surgical procedures. It is, basically,

Origami DNA

On the cover of the March 16,2006 issue of Nature magazine, Caltech researcher Paul Rothemund announced the development of Origami DNA. Not much real origami folding here; however, plenty of DNA folding and great potential for future applications.
The idea is simple: DNA is folded in a back and forth manner and then held together with smaller strands of DNA at key positions. This works because of Watson and Crick pairing: recall biology 101 rule that A bonds with T and C bonds with G. Photo shows origami DNA shapes photographed with atomic force microscope. Why is this important to us? Well, it may lead to other molecular self assembly of nanostructures. Note that these DNA shapes are about 100nm in diameter - that's pretty small because an average germ is 1000nm.

Medical Uses, Stents

In 2003, Zhong You and Kaori Kuribayashi from the University of Oxford developed an origami stent which may be used to enlarge clogged arteries and veins. The waterbomb base from origami was used to design the origami stent.
A stent is a tube which can be collapse into a smaller size. Using a balloon catheter, the stent is maneuvered through the patients veins/arteries to the clot site. When the balloon is inflated, the stent is expanded to a larger diameter, thereby opening the vein/artery for better blood flow. Depending on the application, the tissue may grow over the stent and it remains in the patient permanently. By 2005, a self-deployable origami stent was developed.

Space Telescope, Eyeglass

In order to study galaxies and astronomical events that are far away, a large space telescope is needed. However, giant telescopes cannot be shipped into space due to the size constraints of rockets and shuttles.
Professional origami artist, Robert Lang helped scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (Livermore, California) design a method for folding a space telescope so that it can be packed into a space shuttle and then easily deployed when in space. The foldable telescopic lens is called “Eyeglass”.
In early 2002, a telescopic lens measuring over 3 meters in diameter was constructed. When folded origami style, it was 1.2-meter in diameter and shaped like a cylinder. By early 2004, a 5-meter prototype lens was constructed and shown to concentrate light as expected.
In the future, it may be possible to fold 100-meter telescope lenses into 3-meter diameter cylinders and have these delivered into space - all thanks to origami.

Solar Sails in Space Flight Unit

  • In March of 1995, Japanese scientists used origami concepts to pack and deploy a solar power array in the research vessel called Space Flight Unit (SFU). On Earth, the solar array was folded into a compact parallelogram, and then in space, it was expanded into a solar sail. The method of folding the solar panels is called "Miura-ori", in honor of Koryo Miura, a professor in Tokyo University, who developed the fold.

The Miura-ori (translation = Miura-fold) is famous in map folding. The Miura-ori allows a square piece of paper to be folded in such a way that it can be opened (in one motion) by pulling at two opposite corners. As well, a Miura-ori folded map is less likely to tear at the crease junctions. An easy to use road map - now that's origami science!

    Optigami

In the design of optical systems that incorporate multiple reflections of converging and diverging beams, tedious graphic layout procedures are followed to assure that mirror dimensions are correct and that structural elements do not interfere with the ray bundles. A change in dimension, location, or angle of any one of the system elements requires a complete redrawing of the system, making this a time-consuming and costly process.
    Optigami Example
An example of a simple optigami simulation.
Thus began Jon Myer, a scientist at the Hughes Research Laboratories, in describing a technique for optical layout using origami. Nowadays, the physical layout of mirrors and lenses is done automatically by computer programs that analyze the optics by ray-tracing through the system of lenses and mirrors. In an earlier time, this analysis was carried out by hand. In complex optical systems, rays of light are bent, refracted, focused, and folded through contorted pathways, and ensuring that no bundle of light is inadvertently clipped off can be a nontrivial feat. In the days before personal computers were on every desktop, such ray-tracing was an elaborate paper-and-pencil exercise.
Myer recognized that the origami reverse fold, applied to a narrow triangle of paper, accurately reproduced several important features of optical ray-tracing. By folding a narrow triangle of paper and reverse-folding it at each reflection, one could simulate the contortions of the beam of light as it traversed the system with a concrete object for visualization. As a simulation tool, the reverse fold embodies several features that accurate simulate the tracing of rays of light:
    • The reversal of color that accompanies a reverse-fold simulates image reversal that occurs at each reflection off of a mirror;
    • The angle of the reverse fold automatically gives the proper angle for orienting a mirror at the point of reflection;
    • By cutting and feathering the edges of the triangle, not only can focusing be simulated, but the rough curvature of the focusing mirror is also obtained.
    Folded-Cavity Laser
Schematic diagram of the folded-cavity laser. The left and center figures show how a convention cavity is folded in two places; the right figure shows the configuration of the folded cavity.
A further advantage of the optigami technique is that one can alter the angles and locations of mirrors without altering the total optical path length Ñ an advantage in many optical design problems.
Although simple and elegant, optigami was ultimately superseded by the rapid growth and availability of personal computers and computerized ray-tracing programs. Nowadays, for less than $1000, a computerized ray-tracer can simulate reflections refractions, and vignetting from flat and curved mirrors with considerably greater speed and accuracy than origami approximations. Nevertheless, as an aid to visualization, or for quick-and-dirty calculations — such as the proverbial back-of-the-napkin sketch — optigami still has its place in the optical designer's arsenal of tools.
An example of the latter usage may be found in a type of laser described by US Patent 6,542,529, titled, appropriately enough, a folded-cavity laser. This family of lasers was developed by Swedish engineer Mats Hagberg and myself, working at laser company SDL, Inc. The folded-cavity laser addresses a fundamental problem in a type of laser called an index-guided broad area semiconductor laser — a laser microchip used in thermal printing and green laser pointers, among other places. The beam coming out of these lasers tends to spread across a broad range of angles. Mats showed that by taking a conventional laser and effectively folding the cavity in two places, it was possible to collapse the broad output beam down to a much narrower, much brighter beam, without losing efficiency. So, the next time you see a green laser beam, look close: there just might be some origami inside!
