Origami

Origami

THE SCIENCE OF ORIGAMI
Art of Paper Folding Applied to Engineering
(March 12, 2008)
Origami is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding. With just one sheet of paper, you can make all kinds of objects, such as cranes, rabbits, turtles, and airplanes. Origami made using colored paper can be especially beautiful, and while many people may associate origami with child's play, it has become popular as a hobby for adults in recent years. At the Junkudo Shoten bookstore in Tokyo's Ikebukuro district, for example, there is an "origami for adults" corner where paper-folding patterns aimed at grown-up enthusiasts are displayed. But the possibilities of origami do not end there. There is now research on applying paper-folding techniques to engineering in a field dubbed "origami engineering."

Applications of Origami Engineering
In 2003 the Japan Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics set up a research group called Mathematics of Origami Engineering under the leadership of Tokyo Institute of Technology Professor Hagiwara Ichiro and Dr. Nojima Taketoshi of Kyoto University. The group has since conducted a range of research on possible applications of the principles of origami in science and engineering.
One example of origami engineering can be found in aluminum cans that have geometric indentations on the surface, giving the light cans a strong structure. Another is the spiraled sides of some plastic bottles, which make them easy to crush after use. There are also maps that are folded up tightly to make them small enough for people to carry and can be unfolded simply by holding both ends and pulling. These differing functions are all applications of origami techniques

(Photo courtesy of Dr. Nojima Taketoshi)
The most famous example is the Miura-ori, which has been considered as a method for folding up the antennas of satellites before they are launched. This technique, which was conceived by University of Tokyo Professor Emeritus Miura Koryo, allows an antenna to be unfolded simply by pulling on opposite diagonal corners. The antenna can be collapsed again simply by pushing on the opposite diagonal corners. Usually, complicated procedures are required when a machine is folded in fourths or eighths. With an origami-inspired folding method, however, it can be made extremely simple.
Professor Miura did not come up with this design while folding paper, however. The phenomenon he made use of is known as "buckling," which describes the compression of a cylinder when pressure is applied. When he was creating a formula for buckling, he noticed the crinkles that appeared on the surface of an elliptical cylinder. Using this discovery, he mathematically proved the existence of a structure enabling a surface to be folded up into a point.

The Possibilities of Origami Engineering
There is also a form of math-based entertainment known as geometric origami. Origami is not just a matter of folding paper any which way you want. It is the art of creating a structure by folding a single sheet of paper according to a pattern, and no cutting is allowed. Some of these patterns are geometric, and they make it possible to see geometry in the principles of origami. At the same time, geometric origami can be used in considering how to approach problems in design. Origami engineering is the application of these principles to real-life problems.
In the future, origami structural modeling is expected to be applied in such fields as collision safety engineering, interior noise control, and heat shielding. Buildings, car bodies, and furniture are among the objects likely to feature origami-inspired structures as this field develops.
Origami structures can be found in nature, as well, such as in the growth process of plant leaves and in the wings of insects prior to eclosion. There are undoubtedly sophisticated structures that scientists have yet to discover. It is the hope of researchers going forward that the perspective of origami can be used to find and apply some of these.

Three applications of the the “DNA-Origami” technique (Rothemund, Nature
440, 297-302 (2006)) to problems in precision-synthesis of model materials are
explored. First, the assembly of DNA into long chains of a precisely defined
length will be investigated. These model materials will play an important role in
making high-precision tests of various polymer physics theories. For instance,
competing theories have opposite predictions for the solidification of polymer
films (does this occur at a higher or a lower temperature than bulk plastic) and for
the viscosity of liquid polymer melts (do the chains “reptate” along their lengths
as their main dynamic motion?). Experimental results are based on real physical
systems in which there is considerable variation (polydispersity) in the chain
length, and support each competing theory in one regime or another. In some cases,
it is well known that polydispersity, when accounted for theoretically, changes
the behavior of the system entirely. This method will allow experiments to give
unequivocal advice to polymer theorists. Second, I will describe a recipe for making
so-called “topological gels” or “olympic gels” from a dense liquid of polymers
through a specific chain-closing interaction. Any general interaction which could
close polymer chains into loops competes with a process that simply makes chains
longer and longer. These topological gels are held together by entwined loops of
polymer, rather than covalent bonding or tight physical association driven by hydrogen
bonding. These gels are predicted to have very strange mechanical behavior.
Thirdly, I will give a recipe for forming ordered topological mats resembling
medieval Japanese chain armor at the microscopic level. These membranes should
prove to be strong and flexible. They should also be able to open and close in response
to a local biochemical signal with applications in advanced drug-delivery
techniques.

History of Origami

What are the origins of the paper folding process we now know as origami? Composed of the Japanese words oru (to fold) and kami (paper), origami has a rich and complex history that spans culture, class and geography.

A page from Akisato Rito’s Sembazuru Orikata

Classical and Traditional Origami

Paper was first invented in China around 105 A.D., and was brought to Japan by monks in the sixth century. Handmade paper was a luxury item only available to a few, and paper folding in ancient Japan was strictly for ceremonial purposes, often religious in nature.
By the Edo period (1603–1868), paper folding in Japan had become recreational as well as ceremonial, often featuring multiple cuts and folds. It came to be regarded as a new form of art that was enabled by the advent of paper both mass-produced and more affordable. Written instructions for paper folding first appeared in 1797, with Akisato Rito’s Sembazuru Orikata, or “thousand crane folding.” In 1845, Adachi Kazuyuki published a more comprehensive compilation of paper folding with Kayaragusa; by the late 1800s, the term for paper folding had morphed from orikata (“folded shapes”) to origami.
Europe also has a tradition of paper folding that dates back to the twelfth century or before, when the Moors brought a tradition of mathematically based folding to Spain. The Spanish further developed paper folding into an artistic practice called papiroflexia or pajarita. By the 1800s, kindergarten-aged children in Europe and Japan were learning paper folding.

Modern Origami

Traditional origami is characterized by open-access folding patterns and sequences passed down orally or anonymously from generation to generation. Modern origami often features models created by designers. Many of these models are considered copyrightable material or intellectual property. Modern origami often prioritizes a puzzle aspect to the folding, and the challenge of folding a single square of paper without using cuts or glue.

“Five Intersecting Tetrahedra” by Tom Hull
Akira Yoshizawa, who died in 2005 at age 94, is considered one of the progenitors of modern origami. In the 1930s, he developed a system of folding patterns employing a set of symbols, arrows and diagrams. By the 1950s, these patterns were published and widely available, contributing to origami’s global reach and standardization. Yoshizawa and other origami masters formed local and international organizations publicizing the art.
Today, origami has expanded to incorporate advanced mathematical theories, as seen in BETWEEN THE FOLDS. Mathematical origami pioneers like Jun Maekawa and Peter Engel designed complex and mathematically based crease patterns prior to folding, which emphasized the puzzle aspect of origami, with the parameters of using one piece of uncut paper. Artistic origami has also enjoyed a recent resurgence, with abstract paper folders such as Paul Jackson and Jean-Claude Correia.

A smiley face glowed on the March 16, 2006, cover of Nature. “DNA Origami,” read the headline. “Nanoscale Shapes the Easy Way.” Inside, a relatively brief, single-author paper outlined a method for designing shapes made from DNA that would fold up on their own. The smiling prototype and the playful cover line may have been cute. But the changes the paper brought to a number of far-flung fields were nothing short of profound: Tiny, self-assembling structures, with applications in everything from biology to chip design, were now within our grasp.

Three years later, the research sparked by this breakthrough has just begun to bear fruit, as evidenced by a flurry of papers this summer. Caltech’s Paul Rothemund, the author of the Nature paper, and his collaborators at IBM published a way to fasten DNA origami to microchip materials. William Shih at Harvard led a team that developed three-dimensional shapes and curving structures, among many refinements to the technique. And Jørgen Kjems of Denmark’s Aarhus University published a method to build miniature boxes, equipped with multiple locks and molecules that glow red and green. As it turned out, everyone from cell biologists to drug delivery experts to materials scientists had been looking for just such a way to build.

Building Blocks from Life

In biology, DNA carries information, but it is also in many ways an ideal building material. DNA’s sequence dictates the shape it folds into, and it is cheap and easy to manufacture strands with a custom sequence. And while the precise rules of protein folding are one of the great unsolved mysteries of biology, the folding of single- and double-stranded DNA is chemically well-understood.
DNA had thus been an attractive structural material for nanoengineers for decades, ever since NYU’s Ned Seemans founded the field of DNA nanotechnology in the 1970s. With tiny components that assemble themselves, it was hoped that miniature motors and microchips could be manufactured in beakers for almost no cost. But there was a major barrier to the realization of self-assembling machines. For while nanoengineers could manufacture custom DNA and predict how it would fold, there was no good way to program it into anything but the most basic of shapes.
Paul Rothemund had learned of Seemans’ work in the early 1990s while trying to build a DNA computer—a series of molecules that can perform computations, like a mechanical calculator. But he grew entranced by the idea of DNA shapes that could self-assemble. With this “bottom-up” assembly, a revolution in chip design—and computing speed—could be achieved. Three months of programming brought him to a process that landed him on the cover of Nature—and which has opened the floodgates of nanotech innovation.
DNA origami is actually something of a misnomer; as William Shih notes, the process is more like DNA knitting. Think of a strand of DNA as a straight line—it has no area of its own. But by folding the line back and forth on itself, you can produce a flat plane.
In Rothemund’s method, a length of single-stranded DNA folds back and forth to fill in a flat shape, be it a star, a square, or a smiley face. Then, shorter strands stick parallel and perpendicular to it, turning the single-stranded DNA into a double helix that links back to itself, stabilizing the shape. Finally, a computer tests the shape for structural stability. The finished product, to use the knitting metaphor, is a star, square, or smiley face-shaped blanket.
At the end of his Nature paper, Rothemund pondered the wide-open possibilities of this kind of DNA self-assembly. “I believe that scaffolded DNA origami can be adapted to create more complex or larger structures,” he wrote. “[It] could find use in fields as diverse as molecular biology and device physics.”

The World’s Smallest Doctor

Of the many possible applications of DNA origami, drug delivery is one of the most enticing. One of the major struggles in targeted pharmacology has been getting molecules through cell membranes, says Harvard’s William Shih, a process that bacteria and viruses have mastered, but humans have not. A DNA structure, equipped with the right tools, could help penetrate that barrier. Shih envisions a DNA origami cage with a drug inside, all encased in a lipid envelope that can fuse with a cell’s membrane. Using proteins attached to its surface, the structure would detect whether a cell is infected. When infection is identified, the lipid envelope would merge with the cell membrane, spitting the DNA cage into the cell. Traveling around the circulatory system, these cellular doctors would eventually biodegrade harmlessly.
This dream is still far from becoming a reality. But Shih’s lab has refined point after point of the DNA origami process, laying a foundation for the folding permutations future scientists will need to build functional structures out of DNA.
Shih and his colleagues published the first method for building 3-D DNA origami in May. Rothemund’s method created flat planes, but by folding a plane up accordion-style one can eventually create an object with volume. Shih’s lab produced nanoscale sculptures based on this idea. And in August they published the first method for building curved shapes in Science.
While many of his team’s advances are incremental, they are adding up to a versatile set of new tools. Shih has good taste in choosing what problems to solve, says Rothemund. And Shih says “it’s very exhilarating” to be building the field from scratch.

Unlocking Drug Delivery

As Shih builds the foundation for a revolution in drug delivery, Kjems and his colleagues at Aarhus University in Denmark are working on making a prototype. In May, they published a construction that could also be used to deliver pharmaceuticals: a DNA box that unlocks when it senses infection.
One of the handy characteristics of DNA origami is that its customizable shape makes it highly modular. Designers can assemble several flat planes into a box, keep other molecules inside, and fuse chemicals, dyes, fluorescent proteins, and other kinds of markers to the exterior. If DNA structures could encapsulate drug molecules, then release them when they sense specific markers on the outside of a cell, tremendous specificity in drug application could be achieved.
Using Rothemund’s method, Kjems and his team built a six-sided container, made of flat DNA squares stitched together with short strands. These boxes can open to up to potentially eight different “keys,” which can be anything from microRNAs to cellular markers. To let them see whether the boxes are ajar, they added fluorescent proteins to the locks so that the box glows green when open and red when closed.
The first application of these boxes would likely be as sensors, Kjems says. One could mix them into a sample taken from a patient and see if the sample glows green, indicating that the box has unlocked for a specific disease signature. Eventually, they could be used to deliver drugs in vivo.
But Kjems thinks they could form parts of what is essentially a biological computer. “The box is already a very simple computer. It’s a gate that has two states, like a transistor in a computer,” he says. The transistors could talk to each other, unlocking boxes that contain keys for boxes further down the chain. This could allow researchers to trigger cascades of biochemical reactions; they would essentially be programming a biological system.

Programming with DNA

DNA origami is many times smaller than the features etched on microchips. And just as proteins and other molecules can be fused to DNA origami in hundreds of places, gold nanoparticles and silicon nanowires can be attached as well. Rothemund has been working to construct miniature circuits based on just that principle.
The major problem with using DNA origami to build circuits is that they are made in solution and will pile up randomly on any flat surface. Instead of a finely textured, exquisitely organized platform, early attempts showed the would-be chip components accreted in ugly clumps. But by etching small triangular patches that stick to the DNA, Rothemund and his collaborators at IBM managed to get the miniscule structures to line up in neat rows. Next they will be working to get the protocol to work for non-equilateral structures.
Rothemund foresees a series of wafers and standardized DNA origami that could be combined in different spacings and orientations, finding uses in a variety of fields.
“Some people are experts in carbon nanotubes, some in silicon nanowires, some in metal nanoparticles, some in biological proteins,” he says. “We want them all to be able to use it.”

UCSD Develops High Resolution Camera with Folded Origami Lens

February 5, 2007 – Engineers at the University of California San Diego announced last week that they have developed an annular folded optic imager, or an "origami lens," according to a Feb. 1 UCSD press release. The researchers developed a prototype for the high resolution camera, which holds a folded telephoto lens to maintain a small body size. With this new technology, the camera could have defense applications or even be applied to camera phones, said senior author of the abstract Joseph Ford in an interview with DigitalCameraInfo.com.

"This will allow telephoto cameras to come in smaller packages," said UCSD Associate Professor Joseph Ford of the Jacobs School of Engineering.

UCSD engineers Ford and first author Eric Tremblay and optical systems company Distant Focus Corporation Ron Stack and Rick Morrison have been working on the annular folded optic imager prototype for three years now. It is based on telescope technology dating as far back as 1672, according the release.

This "exotic technology," as Ford called it, allows users to capture high resolution images with a compact camera using a different method than traditional cameras. The UCSD engineers replaced the traditional lens with reflective elements folded on top of one another to reduce the thickness of the optical system.
Using a method called "diamond turning," UCSD engineers cut a series of reflective surfaces onto 5mm of a disk of calcium fluoride with the tip of a diamond. Light travels through a round aperture, bouncing between two 60mm reflective surfaces in a "Z" manner, explained Ford, eventually hitting the CMOS sensor. Unlike standard cameras in which light bounces only twice, the annular folded optic imager allows light to bounce 8 times.

The engineers tested the resolution results against an SLR camera and a Canon SD40 point-and-shoot. The folded imager performed close to the SLR in terms of resolution and outperformed the point-and-shoot model, according to Ford. With this technology, researchers can increase focal length without adding more distance between the lens and the sensor, keeping the camera compact.
Funded by the U.S. Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the annular folded optic imager, or origami lens, could have potential defense applications, although Ford could not give details.

On a consumer level, the technology could be applied to the everyday cell phone. Comparing the size of the camera to an iPod Nano, the annular folded optic imager could maintain the size of mobile phone while supplying a high resolution imager.

"We’ve done the research. We have a design; we’ve tested it. It works," said Ford. "The concern is with manufacturing," he said. With hopes and time, consumers may someday be able find the technology outside the lab and into their pockets.

Hello

Origami benefit applications

1 - Create an emotional connection
One of the investigations carried out about ten families were considered. Information to family and making Origami primary education was given a simple form, the behavior and words used Drgftgvy between family members before and after the training, relationship between family members was Trshdh creative and friendly. Several groups to work with the student and then was also a single. Social relationships and creating a more friendly form of interest created by its creator, was also well visible.
2 - all human beings to solve problems, or are interested in mystery, especially from human beings, science, design, engineering, graphics, mathematics, physics, etc., who love to solve scientific problems and mental are. World of Origami excelled in this regard and most exciting science and art is the human hand has. Regardless of its efficacy and work For many science, exercise great creativity and penchant for creating a positive and constructive in all people from children to adult. Origami than they are a science or an art, a need for the human will is be creative and dynamic. We are not what we want and what Origami is an important component of the present world and especially our future will be. Up to now different Bdlayl lack of creativity and culture of appropriate building and work was, in the media, including radio and television, newspapers, etc., informing and making appropriate bed is not performed in this field. For example, suppliers for TV programs produced low content of programs is easier, to build effective programs and the result of pure research, study projects and the use of experts. Newspapers and we also prefer them easier to pay the daily incidents to the development of science and culture that's caused them to grow and society is dynamic. With this vision, both in the media to attract new ideas and plans for work and came, not so practical initiative. According to all the people with good understanding of iodine with the world of advanced communications facilities, can help society to progress and low working media should fill. Instead fix this and get it and that the constant Bprsym others have for us what is good and sometimes we Byndyshym for this country and our people have given and do what we do.

In this case not only never satisfied to persecution, but they will not love them more than before we Vrzyd. That for people to nature, animals and human beings must love Bvrznd first place one should start practicing lovemaking important, the most inexpensive way to build Vsadh form or by paper and is Origami. Planners should Karmhm educational learning programs in such a way that the end of educational process Hrbrnamh Tghbyr Drjht create desirable behavior more creativity, love and life expectancy, performance and useful in the field ... and the lesson is presented. One of the most effective roads, programs that indirectly cause such changes is useful Frgyran. Origami education along with the history and philosophy of peace and friendship can be one of the most efficient methods for achieving the objectives noted. Conclusions must Mtlvbtr for a course as a pre-school to university to end a good species to be included in content courses.
9 - will be different from non-governmental associations Origami lovers was formed with government support, this art be more general. This community can one best place to spend leisure time all segments of society from children to adults is. Origami only art and science of human is not required, therefore, needs to be community and other arts and sciences, was also.
10 - Origami can be easily replaced many toys that be some role in the growth of creativity and efficiency are not people. When the experimental subjects as the Origami will be taught by different people can clearly see that people were working with the Origami many prefer other games.
11 - many people often live in their own world of imagination, not their real world. Working with Origami Vmvjvdat can be made with the impression of the world super slowly and provide. Humans such tranquility stresses to deal with some real world need.

From Flapping Birds to Space Telescopes: The Modern Science of Origami

The last decade of this past century has been witness to a revolution in the development and application of mathematical techniques to origami, the centuries-old Japanese art of paper-folding. The techniques used in mathematical origami design range from the abstruse to the highly approachable. In this talk, I will describe how geometric concepts led to the solution of a broad class of origami folding problems – specifically, the problem of efficiently folding a shape with an arbitrary number and arrangement of flaps, and along the way, enabled origami designs of mind-blowing complexity and realism, some of which you’ll see, too. As often happens in mathematics, theory originally developed for its own sake has led to some surprising practical applications. The algorithms and theorems of origami design have shed light on long-standing mathematical questions and have solved practical engineering problems. I will discuss examples of how origami has enabled safer airbags, Brobdingnagian space telescopes, and more
